What a complete load of horse twaddle...

Cut-off of jobless aid would lower economic growth
WASHINGTON – If Congress lets unemployment benefits expire this week for the long-term unemployed, they won't be the only ones to feel the pain. The overall economy would suffer, too.
Unemployment benefits help drive the economy because the jobless tend to spend every dollar they get, pumping cash into businesses. A cut-off of aid for millions of people unemployed for more than six months could squeeze a fragile economy, analysts say  read it all but have a barf pan handy
These people need to take a course in Economics 101.  If you take money from one person in the form of taxes and give it to another to spend, it does not "improve the economy."  It is no more than a transfer of funds from the producer to the non-producer.  It doesn't create more funds, but means the producer has less to spend while the non-producer is busy spending the producers money.  How does that improve the economy?  (That question is purely rhetorical)   If we followed the "logic" of this article we should all quit our jobs and go on unemployment and sit back and watch the economy explode...

Laura Schlessinger Erupts on Radio

While I approve almost 100% of the messages promoted by Dr. Laura, I sometimes feel like her approach can be a bit brittle.  However, after hearing only portions of her well modulated rant today since the radio was not turned on in my office, and having my husband (not a Dr. Laura fan) declare her "spot-on", I'll be looking forward to her new show on Sirius XM.

[...]Schlessinger says that Media Matters, along with activists like Sharpton and lawmakers like Rockefeller -- who said recently the Federal Communications Commission should consider shutting down Fox News and MSNBC -- do a disservice to the country, and she has no intention of letting them, or anyone else, shut her up.

"My creative juices are rekindled," she said.  "After having to spend all this time on terrestrial radio with affiliates and advertisers being attacked, you get very distracted. But I just want to forge ahead, even with Al Sharpton asking the FCC to shut down any speech that offends him."

"This is all coming from the Democratic side," she said, noting Rockefeller's political affiliation. "It's very scary. The term 'progressive' always meant to me to progress, not to censor. That Sharpton and Rockefeller want to censor free speech is irrational.  read it all

Call your Senator - S 510 Up for vote today...

When you want to know what's going on in Washington, DC that's important, check out what's missing from the so-called MSM.  Not a peep about S 510, the "FDA Food Safety Modernization Act",
which will be coming up for vote today.  I've posted about this draconian and ill thought out bill that will cost us untold billions of dollars, create layers of bureaucracy, and give giants like Monsanto even more power, but will do very little to keep our food safe.    Great thanks to The Lonely Conservative for alerting us to today's vote and providing us with contact info:

From Right Side News:
On Monday, November 29, 2010, Congress will be back in session at 2:00pm and here some of what will be happening with the Food Safety Bill.
S. 510 is basically Obamacare for the food industry. It will create 17,000 new bureaucrats, whose job is going to be to harass small farmers. It will create huge regulatory burdens for small family farms and even for those who want to grown their own food. This will choke out small farms. For those who like to buy their own healthy food, forget it. It will no longer be available.
At 4:00pm, Senate will resume consideration of S.510... as provided for under the previous order.
At 6:30pm, the Senate will proceed to a cloture vote on the substitute amendment to S.510. Under the agreement reached on Thursday, if cloture is invoked, 4 motions to suspend the rules would be in order. Upon disposition of the motions, the Senate will proceed to vote on passage of the bill, as amended. Senator Reid would like to complete action on the Food Safety bill on Monday. As a result, senators should expect a late night of voting.
Judy Aron, of Consent of the Governed, has tremendous fact-filled post - and we thank her!

S.510 - Creation Of The Food And Garden Police

S. 510: the "FDA Food Safety Modernization Act" makes it a crime for you to grow your own produce and sell it to anyone else without expensive oversight by the government. Other parts of the bill are just as reprehensible.

If this moronic piece of legislation does become the law of the land, you can say goodbye to farmers markets, organically grown produce, raw milk – and other kinds of foods that increasing numbers of Americans have been producing as well as specifically looking to purchase from. Truth be told, it will just be way too expensive for the small producers to comply with all of these new federal regulations and policies. And that is the point - to drive these small producers out of business in favor of huge agri-businesses. It also makes companies like Monsanto the chief controller of all seeds and ultimately of what is grown. It is legislating and blessing food monopolies.

You can be certain that this bill has less to do about food safety, and definitely more to do with federal and corporate control over our food supply. This also comes on the heels of King Obama appointing yet another Czar; that would be an attorney who has fought for and represented Monsanto, as FDA Food Safety Czar! Like we need a Monsanto cheerleader to determine what foods are safe and what are not!
"Monsanto’s Michael Taylor who gave us rBGH and unregulated genetically modified (GM) organisms, appears to have designed it and is waiting as an appointed Food Czar to the FDA (a position unapproved by Congress) to administer the agency it would create — without judicial review — if it passes. S 510 would give Monsanto unlimited power over all US seed, food supplements, food and farming." - Food Freedom

Medicare is not free...

Maggie, over at her famous Notebook,  has a enlightening article about Medicare and the perceptions many people have about the cost.  She wrote in response to Deficit Commission Co-Chair Republican Alan Simpson, who lauded the “Greatest Generation” and slammed those who are on Medicare, or will be in not too many years, as “the greediest generation.”  Once again we have a member of this administration, up to and including the current president, who finds it perfectly acceptable to insult and demean citizens.

"We had some favorite forty-somethings over for Thanksgiving dinner who were shocked to learn that those on Medicare actually pay for coverage. They thought it was free – for life, and we can’t blame them. If you listen to the discussions about Medicare, I believe the goal is to give the impression that coverage is free. It isn’t free and it isn’t even almost free. During the discussion over turkey, dressing and the best sweet potatoes to be served on any table, anywhere, it was determined that a couple will pay just under $700 per month per couple for coverage." read the rest including Maggie's common sense solutions
This hits rather close to home.  My husband started receiving Medicare a little over a year ago and I will be on Medicare starting December 1st.  In the past, other than for about 8 years working at Costco, we have paid for our own private insurance.  It was high deductible and so we paid for all our appointments, check-ups, etc.

We're not real excited about being on Medicare but the way the system is devised, only the extremely wealthy can self-insure.  One of my husband's students is a doctor who accepts Medicare patients and has agreed to be our doctor.  It is doubtful if we could find a doctor within 100 miles who would be willing to take on any  Medicare patients.  And why should they?!  Medicare doesn't pay them squat and is trying to cut that amount by 23%.   It's beyond comprehension why any doctor would treat Medicare patients.

I was a bit shocked to read in Maggie's article that there are actually people who think Medicare is free.  Trust me - it's far from free.  If we opted for prescription coverage (which we didn't) it would be costing us about  7 to 8 hundred dollars per month.  This is in addition to the amount of money we've contributed since the beginning of Medicare.  The only insurance payment that was ever made on my behalf was wrist and hand surgery while I worked at Costco.  I'd say the insurance company did just fine,  considering they received approximately $10K per year for 8 years and only had to pay for a few operations that totaled about 3K.

Aside from the common sense approaches presented by Maggie, another area of health insurance that should be addressed is employer-provided coverage.  It is time for this anachronism to be stopped.  Individuals and families should provide their own insurance rather than have it tied to employment.  Employers are not "giving" you anything when they provide benefits.  It is factored in as part of your salary.  It is not "free."

An Open Letter To Patients Regarding Health Reform

Dear Mr. and Ms. Patient,

It has come to my attention that in order for you to enjoy success as patients in the new era of health care reform, you must start working now to prevent illnesses that might befall you. Do not, under any circumstances, eat or drink too much. Fast food might as well be considered illegal. Exercise three, four, five times a day, even if it means take time off from work. It goes without saying that you should not smoke. The government has data that demonstrates how you have become fat, lazy, and a huge burden on our health care system. Your non-compliance threatens the very fiber of our economy. Even employers realize this, and are using calculators to figure your financial burden to them.  read the rest  (link fixed - sorry)

Sarah Palin's Facebook rebuttal

You have to love Sarah's sense of humor...

A Thanksgiving Message to All 57 States

by Sarah Palin on Thursday, November 25, 2010 at 5:46pm
My fellow Americans in all 57 states, the time has changed for come. With our country founded more than 20 centuries ago, we have much to celebrate – from the FBI’s 100 days to the reforms that bring greater inefficiencies to our health care system. We know that countries like Europe are willing to stand with us in our fight to halt the rise of privacy, and Israel is a strong friend of Israel’s. And let’s face it, everybody knows that it makes no sense that you send a kid to the emergency room for a treatable illness like asthma and they end up taking up a hospital bed. It costs, when, if you, they just gave, you gave them treatment early, and they got some treatment, and ah, a breathalyzer, or an inhalator. I mean, not a breathalyzer, ah, I don’t know what the term is in Austrian for that…

Of course, the paragraph above is based on a series of misstatements and verbal gaffes made by Barack Obama (I didn’t have enough time to do one for Joe Biden). YouTube links are provided just in case you doubt the accuracy of these all too human slips-of-the-tongue. If you can’t remember hearing about them, that’s because for the most part the media didn’t consider them newsworthy. I have no complaint about that. Everybody makes the occasional verbal gaffe – even news anchors.

Obviously, I would have been even more impressed if the media showed some consistency on this issue. Unfortunately, it seems they couldn’t resist the temptation to turn a simple one word slip-of-the-tongue of mine into a major political headline. The one word slip occurred yesterday during one of my seven back-to-back interviews wherein I was privileged to speak to the American public about the important, world-changing issues before us.

If the media had bothered to actually listen to all of my remarks on Glenn Beck’s radio show, they would have noticed that I refer to South Korea as our ally throughout, that I corrected myself seconds after my slip-of-the-tongue, and that I made it abundantly clear that pressure should be put on China to restrict energy exports to the North Korean regime. The media could even have done due diligence and checked my previous statements on the subject, which have always been consistent, and in fact even ahead of the curve. But why let the facts get in the way of a good story? (And for that matter, why not just make up stories out of thin air – like the totally false hard news story which has run for three days now reporting that I lobbied the producers of “Dancing with the Stars” to cast a former Senate candidate on their show. That lie is further clear proof that the media completely makes things up without doing even rudimentary fact-checking.)

“Hope springs eternal” as the poet says. Let’s hope that perhaps, just maybe, they might get it right next time. When we the people are effective in holding America’s free press accountable for responsible and truthful reporting, then we shall all have even more to be thankful for!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

ATF - Rogue Agency

Let's not let this one slip by us...

Anti-gun Zealot Andrew Traver Nominated to Head ATF

Look at some of the things he supports.

- Establish a “best practices" protocol for voluntary gun surrender programs
- Destroy all firearms that come into the possession of any law enforcement agency (even if such firearms were initially stolen and then recovered)
- Track and follow all private gun sales in a national data base with a mandatory background check on the purchaser
- Limit the sale of “multiple handguns”
- Mandate a “ballistic fingerprint” for every gun that is sold
- Require that every gun come with a lock
- Require that every owner provide for a federally regulated “safe storage” for his weapons, and “prosecute those who fail to comply with [those] safe storage laws.”
- Enact legislation “to allow federal health and safety oversight of the firearms industry.”

Most chillingly, recommendation #22 was: “The federal government should increase funding to the ATF for personnel and technical assistance to combat gun violence.”
"The bureau’s history reaches back to 1886 where the agency was part of the U.S. Treasury Department, but grew substantial legs in 1968 after the Gun Control Act was passed. Following the 9/11 attacks, the ATF was transferred to the Justice Department, where it “regulates via licensing the sale, possession and transportation of firearms, ammunition and explosives in interstate commerce.” The bureau has a budget exceeding $1 billion annually and employs 5,000 including 2,400 special agents.

Special agents have the broadest authority of any federal agency, with the power to “enforce any statute in the United States Code. Specifically, ATF special agents have [the] lead investigative authority on any federal crime committed with a firearm,” and while the agency may cooperate with other federal agencies, it is free to operate independently of any of them. " source

Do Not Forget Ruby Ridge

Ruby Ridge Siege
Lest you have forgotten, the ATF, which operates  independently,  was behind the framing of Randy Weaver for a weapons violation.  The Federal Marshals drove tanks up Randy's dirt road at Ruby Ridge to his remote cabin which just happens to be spitting distance from my home.  They shot his son, Samuel age 14, in the back, killing him.  They shot and killed his wife, who was standing in the door of their cabin holding their 10 month old infant daughter, Elisheba.  A friend of the Weavers, Kevin Harris, was also shot and wounded as well as Randy.  They even killed the family pet dog, Striker, and proceeded to drive back and forth over his body until he was a pancake.

On about August 24, 1992, the fourth day of the siege on the Weaver family, FBI Deputy Assistant Director Danny Coulson wrote a memo:
OPR 004477
Something to Consider

1. Charge against Weaver is Bull Shit.
2. No one saw Weaver do any shooting.
3. Vicki has no charges against her.
4. Weaver's defense. He ran down the hill to see what the dog was
barking at. Some guys in camys shot his dog.
Started shooting at him. Killed his son. Harris did the
shooting [of Degan]. He [Weaver] is in pretty strong legal position."

Fire at Waco
Approximately 6 months later the ATF spearheaded a seige on the David Koresh compound in Waco, TX.  When the ATF failed to serve a search warrant, they were joined by the FBI and initiated the siege.  Fifty days later, a second failed assault on the compound started a fire killing 76 people, including more than 20 children and two pregnant women.

We have a dangerous habit of believing that it "won't happen to us."  Well it could, and the way things are going it may strike sooner than you expect.  American citizens are being lined up at airports and frisked like common criminals and threatened with 11K fines if they try to leave - all to "keep us safe." How long before this takes place at the train stations, buses, and subways?

It seems to me the things that Mr. Travers supports should be applied to the ATF  and not to law obeying citizens of this country.

Next up for the lame ducks? The DREAM Act...

From the Washington Times:
Under the current version of the legislation, any illegal alien, regardless of his or her current age, who arrived in this country prior to age 16, would qualify for amnesty simply by enrolling in some educational program or the military. In addition to green cards, DREAM Act beneficiaries would be entitled to billions of dollars (which the federal government doesn’t have) in educational assistance programs and in-state tuition subsidies in whatever states they happen to reside.
What this means is that a United States citizen from another state would pay higher tuition than an illegal alien. Now that makes lots of sense.  This is no more than a recruitment drive for democratic voters to further feed at the trough of the taxpayers.

From: Senator Jeff Sessions, R-AL, writing for the Center for Individual Freedom

Ten Things You Need to Know About the DREAM Act

1. The DREAM Act Is NOT Limited to Children, And It Will Be Funded On the Backs Of Hard Working, Law-Abiding Americans

2. The DREAM Act PROVIDES SAFE HARBOR FOR ANY ALIEN, Including Criminals, From Being Removed or Deported If They Simply Submit An Application

3. Certain Criminal Aliens Will Be Eligible For Amnesty Under The DREAM Act

4. Estimates Suggest That At Least 2.1 Million Illegal Aliens Will Be Eligible For the DREAM Act Amnesty. In Reality, We Have No Idea How Many Illegal Aliens Will Apply

5. Illegal Aliens Will Get In-State Tuition Benefits

6. The DREAM Act Does Not Require That An Illegal Alien Finish Any Type of Degree (Vocational, Two-Year, or Bachelor’s Degree) As A Condition of Amnesty

7. The DREAM Act does not require that an illegal alien serve in the military as a condition for amnesty, and There is ALREADY A Legal Process In Place For Illegal Aliens to Obtain U.S. Citizenship Through Military Service

8. Despite Their Current Illegal Status, DREAM Act Aliens Will Be Given All The Rights That Legal Immigrants Receive—Including The Legal Right To Sponsor Their Parents and Extended Family Members For Immigration

9. Current Illegal Aliens Will Get Federal Student Loans, Federal Work Study Programs, and Other Forms of Federal Financial Aid

10. DHS Is Prohibited From Using the Information Provided By Illegal Aliens Whose DREAM Act Amnesty Applications Are Denied To Initiate Their Removal Proceedings or Investigate or Prosecute Fraud in the Application Process

S510, TSA, Open Borders, Government Waste, Vacuum Sealers, Preparing, Smart Pills, and Salad Bars - Oh my...

My husband voted this the top "go to" link of the day.

Reaganite Republican brings us

TSA Enhanced Screening Procedures . . .

and we thank him (notice RR is using my trademark three little dots... called an ellipsis.)

And while TSA agents are feeling up your daughters, the Muslim terrorists are walking across our southern border along with the drug dealers.

I have one question for the people that appear on the view - Why?  And the same question goes for the "brains have turned to mush" people that watch this drivel dribbling from the mouths of these vile women.

Mind Numbed Robot has a top-o-the line follow-up post, bringing us more facts and figures on something I posted about yesterday - S510 and we thank him!

We live in North Idaho. It gets cold here, but thankfully not as cold as some places like Minnesota.  When we bought our current house one of the first things we did was install an efficient wood stove.  One winter the electricity was off for three days.  While we remained warm and even cooked meals on top of the stove (the great outdoors became our refrigerator) - neighbors living in big fancy houses were cold and miserable. Water heated on the stove became our "bath" water, and our kerosene lanterns brightened our evenings.
People today are woefully unprepared for the unexpected.  In particular city people who think that every time they hit a switch their world will "light up", suffer during times of emergency.    It's just common sense to be prepared.  Our parents knew this and so should you...

Vacuum Sealers

And to answer Quite Rightly about what type of vacuum sealer I use - it's the Food Saver (the highest rated vacuum sealer on the market.)  I purchased one at Costco years and years ago.  It paid for itself the first time I used it.  We purchase much of our food in bulk or at least larger quantities.  For instance:  cheddar cheese in five pound chunks purchased at Costco is about half the cost of the grocery store (and it's better cheese.)  The chunk is cut into 3 or 4 pieces, each of which is vacuum sealed.  It's good for many, many months.

Spices purchased in bulk are decanted into pint canning jars, vacuumed sealed, and can last for years.  When I make meatballs it is usually by the hundreds.  They are frozen on trays and then vacuum sealed.  I buy whole tri-tip roasts for about $3.00 per pound less than pre-cut.  I cut up the steaks myself and vacuum them for the freezer.  One tri-tip gives us steaks for about a year.  Time investment?  About one hour to save hundreds of dollars.

One year I kept careful track of everything I purchased at Costco, plus any sale items from other stores, and compared it to the equivalent cost at our local grocery store.  My savings for that year was approximately five thousand dollars. What could you do with an extra five grand?

Beck TV Background Guide to Food Storage Preparation

“Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.”

"This proverb offers an important piece of advice, especially for today’s uncertain times.  As Glenn explains on his Thursday Fox News 5 p.m. broadcast, it’s important for you and your family to always have hope for the future, but to be prepared to face life’s uncertainties.
Are you prepared?  Here’s a useful guide from Glenn on what you can do:" read the rest

Thanks to New Zealand blog for this little video that expains government spending to boost the economy and why it doesn't work.  It backs up the most important lesson I ever learned about running a successful business:  There is money coming in and money going out.  What's coming in better be more than what's going out.  Simple!

Which brings us to Fuzzy Logic and the Socialist-Progressives' Millionaire Phobia Dilemma.

Unemployed to go without turkeys this Thanksgiving?

Maybe if we defunded crap like Planned Parenthood there would be money to help the unemployed.  Ya think?  Pundette brings us:    Pence: Let's defund Planned Parenthood

Or how about de-funding NPR?  Another Black Conservative brings us House fails to eliminate NPR funding

This is something I knew nothing about, but thanks to my favorite Bunni, I do now...

Another Bitter Pill, Watch and Learn!

And while our president has once again escaped the confines of DC, his crazy wife is wanting to put salad bars in schools.  I say give the little brats a brown paper bag with a PB and J sandwich and call it lunch.  Take all those cafeterias out of the schools.  I'm tired of feeding everyone's kids. And I don't want to hear from any bleeding heart liberal about the kids that are starving.  That can be handled locally by the school purchasing some peanut butter and a loaf of bread at the day-old bakery outlet where, as a matter of fact, I purchase my bread.

S510 passes Senate

Welcome Free Republic and Resistnet folks.  You guys rock!   I would be honored if you added me to your reader or became a follower.

Whenever there is a big kerfuffle going on, in this case the TSA conditioning Americans to line up like Jews headed for boxcars, I look around for what the puppet-masters don't want us to see.  In this case it's S510 - The Food Safety and Modernization Act, which is no more about keeping our food safe then feeling up our "junk" is about keeping us safe at the airport.

It passed the Senate yesterday with the help of these Republicans:

Alexander (R-TN)
Barrasso (R-WY)
Collins (R-ME)
Corker (R-TN)
Enzi (R-WY)
Grassley (R-IA)
Gregg (R-NH)
Johanns (R-NE)
LeMieux (R-FL)
 Lugar (R-IN)
Snowe (R-ME)
Thune (R-SD)
 Vitter (R-LA)
Voinovich (R-OH)

The republican Mother was the first to bring this bill to my attention and the connection with what Monsanto is doing - and we thank her!  I've known for years and years that genetcally altered seeds, which include hybrid plants, is not a good idea.  A hybrid plant will not produce seed that can be grown the next year and produce a plant like the parent plant.  If you've ever grown hybrid tomatoes and witnessed a few "volunteer" plants pop up the following year, you know what I'm talking about. They will not produce fruit or if they do, it's small and generally doesn't ripen.   There is no way possible that hybrid and genetically altered seed can be kept from eventually infecting non-hybrid seeds.

My advice to you?  Buy some non-hybrid seeds if you like to garden. Heck - buy non-hybrids if you like to eat.  Seal them in jars using a vacuum sealer and each year collect seeds.  I've been collecting seeds for years, although it simply started out as a way to save money.  And plan on writing your Congressmen and Senators and demand that this bill be thrown in the same junk-pile as Obamacare.

Bristol Palin makes finals on Dancing with the Stars. Lunatic lefty heads explode...

Nothing has shown to the world the power of Sarah Palin more than what I witnessed last night.  Against all odds, Bristol Palin made it into the finals of Dancing with the Stars, beating out singer Brandy.  While Bristol's dancing has improved, her being in the finals is, speaking from the viewpoint of a professional ballroom dancer, a bit odd - until you factor in the votes of the public.

Never mind the endorsements by Sarah that propelled many people into political office.  Last night spoke volumes about the sentiment of the American public who have spent the past several years being called "stupid bitter clingers."  Being carefully ignored is the statement of her professional partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy , who said he moved to this country for the very reasons that he and Brandy were voted off - the voice of the people being heard.

Bristol joined this contest with not one bit of dancing or performing experience.  Given that, the job she is doing is phenomenal.  With just a bit of extra time, again my professional opinion, she would probably surpass Brandy.  Bristol's personality is the type that produces precise footwork and attention to detail.  We have already witnessed her emotional connection to the music and her fluidity of movement improve as her fears have subsided.

I can sympathize completely with Bristol because I started my ballroom dance career in  the same way as she has.  There's a reason they call it "paralyzing" fear. My fear was so great that executing a simple box-step was almost impossible.

The folks of this country have gathered Bristol to their hearts.  I've surmised since the beginning that Bristol's being asked onto DWTS was a ploy to further trash the Palin family.  The populace has stood up and said, "no more."

Next up?  Charges of racism.  Wait for it!

The Lunatic Left Responds:

Man Shoots TV Over Bristol's 'Dancing'Routine
A SWAT team posted up outside a home in Wisconsin yesterday -- after a shotgun toting 67-year-old man blasted his TV because he was so enraged with Bristol Palin's performance on "Dancing with the Stars."  more

Are you one of the 1,175,411 exempt from Obamacare?

The following chart compliments of Health and Human Resources Department of the United States where they are (in their words) "improving the health, safety, and well-being of America."
"Applications for waivers from annual limit requirements are reviewed on a case by case basis by Department officials who look at a series of factors including whether or not a premium increase is large or if a significant number of  enrollees would lose access to their current plan because the coverage would not be offered in the absence of a waiver."
Wait - I thought if we liked our plan we could keep our plan. Now a waiver is required? And why is that?  Because under Obamacare rates would have risen and benefits would decrease.
