why am I not surprised?
Let's put this in perspective. Are the teachers being asked to take a 50% cut in pay? Pay 100% of their health insurance costs? Why no. They're being asked to to cover half of their pension contributions and 13 percent of their own health insurance costs. That's it.

I read the title and thought, "Thank goodness someone is taking the side of the worker because the full force of the legislative branch is against them!"
It's easy to parcel this issue and say, "what's a little 12% cut!?!?!" The point of what the governor and legislature in WI are trying to do is break a contract negotiated by the union on behalf of the employees. You start messing with the right of workers to unionize and negotiate their compensation you'll see efforts to eliminate minimum wages, 40 hour work weeks, overtime, health benefits, 401K plans, vacations, and some day the employment of children in sweat shops. Employee groups without coming together and bargaining as a group leaves the worker at the mercy of the company.
For those of us who have always worked without union representation we need to remember that labor laws are the result of unions.
