(Newser) – Husbands create seven hours a week of extra housework for their wives, while they themselves spend less time on housework than they did as singles, a new study has found. But it's not all bad news for women. Researchers tracking housework hours of single and married people also found that women devote less time now than they did in 1976, while men do more than twice as much, the Ann Arbor News reports.

Still, women devote more hours to domestic work than men do, with 17 hours a week in 2005 compared to 13 hours for men. In 1976, women worked 26 hours a week in the home while men worked just six hours. A stay-at-home dad said he wasn’t surprised. “With more women working, men have to pick up some of the slack,” he said.

I am way messier than hubby but when I do clean I am more thorough. Maybe that's the crux of it...men and women have different cleaning styles.

Don't get me started - and I have a husband who does help (some) around the house.

I agree with Angela, I so think men and women have different cleaning styles and also different ideas of "what" clean is.. and that can be something that drives me crazy:)

I've never been married... but I don't understand how a man can create seven more hours of housework. I wonder if the study properly controlled for other factors. Married women probably live in bigger houses with more stuff to clean, and most of them have children, and they also work fewer hours outside the home. All of those things would increase the time married women spend on housework without being directly the fault of a messy husband. Hopefully the study took that into account. Now, I'm not denying that men can be messy...

People also have different cleaning levels.

Rachel - wait till you're married...LOL

Angela pretty much hit the nail on the head. While we may be messier, husbands don't even notice a dirty toilet (and their toilet is always dirty. Really!

I wonder how many hours my children add to my housework? I bet each of them add more than Steve does.

ask my wife
i'm a better housekeeper than she
BUT
as an agreed upon division of labors, she does most of it
and i have to bite my lip 'cause i'm less available to do it
so we agree to accept and support each other's efforts
