Brilliance in the combox...

from our friend Dufekin.

I contend that I have the smartest readers in the world and Dufekin's comment is proof.

Adrienne:
The Communist goal was a completely secular country. I'd say that they've done a pretty good job of it, wouldn't you?
Separation of church and state does not mean what most people think it means.
Dufekin:
Well, the Communists failed entirely on that point. The Venerable Fulton Sheen once noted that more people in the Soviet capital of Moscow illegally attended the Orthodox Church on Sunday than joined the Communist Party (a legal action, entitling one to "more equal" status and special privileges). Last year, the only country in the entire world (with the possible exception of the Holy See) in which a majority of the population went to a Catholic Mass or an analogous eastern Eucharistic celebration on a typical Sunday was Poland. In many Latin American countries, barely more than a third of the population goes to Mass on Sunday. They had a bishop a few decades ago, Karol Cardinal Wojtyła, a canonized saint, who fearlessly led a profound spiritual battle that undermined and ultimately completely vanquished the repressive Communist regime, all without his side even taking up armaments.
I'm old enough that I went to public schools that instilled a profound fear of all things Communist. Unfortunately and indeed shockingly, young adults today, even the most well educated young adults who achieved high grades at the best schools, even schools with a relatively conservative reputation, can barely recognize Communist ideology, lack even the most elementary historical background information on even a single Communist country, live in complete ignorance of the genocidal "successes" of Communist governance, and routinely fall sway to Communist propaganda, even if they live in relatively very conservative parts of these United States of America.
The university system routinely turns intelligent, God-fearing teenagers from productive, conservative, pious families into atheistic Communists too stupid, confused, and delusional to recognize the difference between boys and girls. Tragically, only a third of American teenagers even have parents to rear them; most of the rest live in unstable situations, typically without any ecclesial influence. Even worse, a large number of children live in highly dysfunctional households, riven with crime, gangs, drugs, and adults who usually neglect or often abuse them in various ways; these households every year in this city alone simply throw away hundreds, probably thousands, of children, mostly teenagers but some much younger, to live alone on the streets and scavenge for sustenance. And a quarter of all American babies suffer death before they even get a chance at birth. Any wonder why our youth reject God and His Church or never find Him in the first instance?
Incidentally, those public schools a quarter-century ago taught us that the "wall of separation of Church and state," to which Thomas Jefferson referred metaphorically in a private letter, not in the Constitution, forbade the State from regulating the Church, which nevertheless retains the right, even the duty, of influencing the State and particularly of instructing its officers in moral and ethical principles (like not killing innocent babies). Strangely, today, in newly Communist America, the State without restraint regulates the Church, which increasingly dares not speak on matters of political interest, even those clearly and explicitly in Sacred Scripture.
When the Communist government of Poland built a drab brutalist suburb of Kraków in the Communist style, without allowing the construction of a Church building, the sainted local archbishop Wojtyła held so many large, beautiful, and frequent outdoor religious celebrations in defiance of the Communist regime, which ultimately consented to the construction and the consecration of large, beautiful, traditional Church buildings that stood in stark contrast to their ugly drab surroundings. Those churches survived, full of people, even young Poles, until coronvirus hysteria disorder struck; the Communist regime vanished three decades ago, but is its return imminent? In any case, you can hold Mass and Eucharistic processions and adoration outdoors, and the weather in much of the country is getting nicer.
Perhaps it's time to take Christ to the streets and proclaim the Gospel to all people, even politicians, teaching them to observe all that He commands us.
(Sorry for the long-winded rant. I'm just livid at the Communists/Democrats and simply prefer to live in the America that is not fast becoming an advanced society like the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.)

But as that holy bishop, known to the world as Pope Saint John Paul II, tells us repeatedly, echoing the Scriptures, fear not!

Thank you, Dufekin. No apologies needed!

From the combox...

where real gems of thought lurk.

Let's show them the light of day, shall we?

Some comments in response to post:   Archbishop Chaput of Philadelphia speaks out...

From Zilla of the Resistance:
I am very angry with many of my fellow Catholics and the Church leadership who overwhelmingly supported Obama and his evil government takeover of health care in the first place. In both cases, there was ample evidence that he was anti-life, anti-Christian and anti-human; there were ample warnings, but those warnings were willfully ignored and those of us who tried to get he truth out were demonized. Catholics who voted for Obama and embraced Obamacare were not mislead, the evidence was clear from the get go exactly what would happen as a consequence of their support and now they are reaping what they have sown with their own deliberate arrogance. Did they not care that Obama consistently took the most radical and evil positions on Life issues, such as actually FIGHTING to make sure that a baby born alive who survived an abortion would never know warmth or compassion or kindness or comfort and would simply be stuck in a closet to die alone and in pain? Where was their conscience THEN? They should have not had their heads so far up their own rear ends in the first place, they should have had a conscience to begin with, instead of bitching about it after the fact. The thing that sucks about this is because of THEM, we all have to suffer.
Tina adds:
Wow, great post and right to the heart of the truth, Zilla of the Resistance!

We are all going to suffer incredibly because our Church leadership is riddled with those unfit for Office.

Even Archbishop Chaput, who is an orthodox and holy man, misses the most crucial part of the equation, when he says in expressing his disagreement re: the HHS mandate that it's, "his personal view and people are free to disagree" - Hello?? Why is Bishop Chaput characterizing opposition to subsidizing that which violently strips religious freedom on one of the most crucial Church teachings as "personal opinion"? Last time I checked, this is an official and foundational Church belief, to be shouted from the rooftops, activate the entire church and damn the fears from the IRS and throw Obama out!

Also, Bishop Chaput states, "But it is this administration -- not Catholic ministries or institutions or bishops -- that chose the timing and nature of the fight." Here, in what Archbishop Chaput sees as a positive regarding the lack of aggression by the Church, is really the precise reason we are in this mess, because the Catholic leadership is totally unable or unwilling to take the fight to Obama.

IOW, when Christ told St. Peter that "the gates of hell would not prevail" against His Church, His statement illustrates the Church on OFFENSE, not on badly executed defense, such as the Bishops waiting for Obama to repeal something he never had the right to take, and would never have attempted to take if the Church took the fight to Obama instead of the other way around.

P. S. Never forget that all Muslims are completely exempted from any participation in obamacare.
Sheraton has some good advice:
I agree with your thoughts, but we have to DO something, and I have been thinking on this for several days as I am as disgusted as you about this:

1) We've got to keep talking about this to everyone we can: I came out of Mass today (after happily listening to a letter from our Archbishop, J. Peter Sartain read to us by our pastor), and while walking out brought the issue up to a teacher at my daughters' Catholic school, and she said "Oh, well, hopefully it will be reversed..." and I said, NO, the original mandate is already law, and Obama LIED about being 'accommodating' at his press conference.

2) Let your local and national representatives know how you feel about this; I am sorry to say that laws similar to the HHS mandate are presently being considered in my state (Washington).

3) Work to get Obama out of the WH, and take back the Senate and retain control of the House.

4) The opposition would love to see us turn our anger toward Pelosi, Sibelius et al., but I prefer to recall they will have their Day of Judgment before God.

5) Try to reach out to any right-thinking person you can about this, especially our non-catholic fellow-citizens who are believers or simply concerned about their individual freedoms--if they're not, they should be!

Finally, for more inspiration, go read JR Dunn's column at the American Thinker--it will lift your heart a little (I've needed that these past few days!).
A.Men said:
Roman Catholics, get a spine. Start with publicly throwing Pelosi, Kerry, Kennedy, and other abortion worshippers out of the Roman Catholic Church!
McNorman:
How can they possibly be shocked? All of this man's actions (including those that he encircles himself with) pointed to exactly what he is and has done. He is no man of faith. He and his ilk are evil. The warnings were blatantly obvious. The way that he got into the WH was a blaring sign of what was to come. The DNC would stop at nothing to force this upon our country.

We have allowed these creatures to rise to power, we can also become determined and begin to take them down. A.Men is right, start throwing out those that are playing both sides of the fence. We won't have much left. I don't mean to state that there cannot be a middle ground because there always is however, now there is no middle ground.

I think every politician should own their behavior. Feet to the fire.

From the combox

My Google Reader has over 400 sites  I routinely peruse.  While plowing through this information everyday can be quite time consuming, the reading of the comments on many posts takes up the majority of the time.  While I'm very interested in what "experts" in different fields have to say, the com-boxes provide some of the best information.

On sites like American Thinker the quality of the comments sometimes overshadows the article.  My own combox provides some pretty darn good comments from people I consider to be more than a little smart.

Abby from Abbey's Road posted this on my "Chilling" post
As the Bible says, every person will have a number ... yes, it is chilling, and it is also SOCIALISM! I pray to God that America survives Obama's term and that someone, some unknown individual who truly cares about THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY comes forward and is elected.

You do know that the proposed healthcare bill is 2,700 pages? I posted something on my blog about it this morning. (link added by moi)  Your elected officials (1) will not read every paragraph of a 2,700 page document; (2) admit to the back door agreements that are filling the bill with special favors; or (3) vote as those who elected them would want. If so, they would poll the people of their respective districts. Congress is a complete and utter disgrace to the Constitution written all those years ago by truly GREAT men who cared about the United States of America!

I am mad as hell and I, for one, am not going to take this any more. I am very vocal in my community and I can only spread the word, and THE WORD, and hope it sinks in.

Say it: "TERM LIMITS!" It's really simple, you know ... JUST DO IT!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Peace and blessings be with you, Adrienne!
And from Quite Rightly

Yep. If you wonder about the plausibility of this, all you need to do is read the published works of Obama's health care advisors. Then attend a couple lectures by futurists. The biggest immediate problem between getting from here to there (that I see, and I'm no expert) is getting the health care system computerized. That's not getting a lot of attention, because many people still think setting up a computer system to handle complex data for hundreds of millions of people is a snap. If it was such a snap, you'd be able to get into the practice page! But if everybody is "wearing" an implanted chip... Nowadays the utility meter reader doesn't come into most people's houses. They drive down the street in a truck picking up radio signals sent out by the meters in each home. A few years down the road . . .
MightyMom provided more:

Quite Rightly....there is already a federal law that all hospitals use 100% computerized charting by some not too far in the future date...I think 2011??...and therefore all hospitals are in the process of changing to computerized charts....There is also already a process of reporting of "certain quality indicators" to the federal govt by every hospital. In all fact...that computer system you refer to is already 75% in operation and the linking of it all is about a year away. For example. Think of CVS or Walgreen's commercials...all their computers are linked...as are all 10 hospitals that are owned by the company I work for. You walk into a hospital in Dallas then leave and come to my hospital 45 miles south and I have all your info at my fingertips. the pieces of the network are already there....all Big Brother has to do is link them.

How to fix the USA

From the combox:

Sarah - Kala said...
People probably would take me to task for my suggestions (I don't know enough political stuff to make much sense but at least I admit that up front - so my ignorance is really just that: ignorance). We need to clean out D.C. by just getting them all fired out of there . . . restore this country to the original founding father's ideals . . . based on the Constitution. The Constitution is still a fantastic document. We need to do something about Supreme Court Justices - the get assigned there and stay there until they decide to retire and/or die? Silly! Same thing with the Senators: TERM LIMITS. Also, we need to really go back to basics in education. In order to graduate, kids should have to take the "citizen" test - and pass it with an 80% or more. What say you?
Sarah - it's almost impossible for one person to keep up with things since they (the bad guys) are moving so fast.

All those reforms you mentioned are necessary but IMHO will not happen. The teachers union has a stranglehold on "education", over 40% of the citizens are on some sort of "public welfare" (often masquerading as a government jobs.)

This system we call the USA is going to collapse - either slowly like Venezuela or all at once.

I vote for all at once so we can begin the process of rebuilding. The people that deny what is going on and stick their heads in the sand will perish.  The others will make prudent preparations which will ensure their survival.   Track-O-'Crat has some additional thoughts on this and some good links...

Evil Spirits Roaming Free

I've been fairly horrified these past months about the direction this country is taking. One of the problems in our "politically correct" culture is this insane desire to separate politics and religion, or indeed, separate any sort of religion or morality from the public square.

Nobody is willing to say the obvious - we have a spiritual problem. You cannot operate in the vacuum of humanism, turn your back on our Creator, and expect things to work. We have become a people living lives of "quiet desperation", surrounding ourselves with ugliness in art, architecture, music, and speech. Our so-called journalists have become foul mouthed shills for a corrupt administration. We entertain ourselves with movies such as the recently released Bruno, which is nothing more than main stream pornography.

We have become dulled to the outrages taking place in our society and yet refuse to stand up and say the truth. Sarah Palin is hated most for her reliance on God. That is the real basis of the constant stream of abuse and invectives hurled at her. I am reminded of scenes from The Exorcist while observing people rip into her.

Make no mistake about this; there is a devil. Jesus knew there was a devil and so should we.

From the combox:

My smart lawyer feller friend in Spokane has left such an insightful comment about Mark Levin's book Liberty and Tyranny. I felt it deserved to be put up here where everyone can read it.

Mark in Spokane has left a new comment on your post "Liberty and Tyranny Another must have book."

Well, I bought the book this weekend on your recommendation, and I have to say it was good, but I was surprised at how little he talked about the importance of family. His "Statist" take on liberalism didn't allow him to acknowledge that when it comes to marriage, family and the right to life, the government has a role in defending our social institutions and in protecting the life of the unborn. He got caught in his own ideology, and wound up not addressing the critical issues upon which the future of our civilization is predicated: the family and the right to life.

To be blunt, a libertarian order that preserves the culture of death is no better (and in fact may wind up being worse) than the current liberal order that embraces abortion on demand and other evils. One cannot demand natural rights for oneself and deny them to one's neighbor -- Lincoln understood this, it was his great conservative insight. In Lincoln's day, the natural right under attack was the natural right of liberty -- the right of each man to be free. In our day, the natural right under attack is the right to life -- the right of each person at each stage of his or her life to be free of the arbitrary deprivation of life by private caprice without the due process of law.

Without the preservation of all our natural rights -- the rights to life, liberty and property guaranteed to each person in our nation by our Constitution's 5th and 14th Amendments, no decent civil society is possible, no truly free social order is possible. All that will be is a predator-state, with the strong and the privileged feasting upon the weak and depersonalized. It will not matter whether such an order is cloaked in the rhetoric of freedom or not. It will not be a conservative order, and it will not be a free society. It will be a tyranny.

Well said, Mark!!

from the combox:

Memorial Day is truly a day to honor our veterans, but it is also a day to pay respect to anyone close to us who has passed on, whether they be relatives, friends, etc. Perhaps our current president is confusing Memorial Day with Veterans Day?

I agree re: being chided once again for not measuring up. Rather than admonishing and wagging his finger at the rest of us, he should first check his own long laundry list of things he has done wrong, and continues to do wrong. We are to first check the mote in our own eye, which based on his political history so far, is about the size of a ponderosa pine. One Bead Short of a Rosary

This pretty well sums it up....

Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were. A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back.

Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the
local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall.

When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must have
stung quite a bit.

The complaint:

'Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base:

Whom do we thank for the morning airshow? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 A.M, a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns early bird special?

Any response would be appreciated.

The response:

Regarding 'A wake-up call from Luke's jets' On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m.,

A perfectly timed four- ship fly by of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at
Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt. Jeremy Fresques. Capt Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in
Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.

At 9 a. m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City
to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend.

Based on the letter writer's recount of the fly by, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured..

A four-ship fly by is a display of respect the Air Force gives to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.

The letter writer asks, 'Whom do we thank for the morning air show?

The 56th Fighter Wing will make the call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you....Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.

One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Words of Wisdom

from the combox:

Sarah writes...

*****Dark days . . . but we must not forget we have the Light of Christ. We definitely have our work cut out for us, but we have to remember Thy Will Be Done . . . keep Christ in the middle of it and we will be fine.

*****Some times I read this stuff and it makes me feel bitter, helpless, depressed and scared. What to do? Get my weapon: the Rosary. I'm so grateful for this Faith - even if it means I don't understand it all and that true martyrdom may be required. I mean, St. Catherine was the girl who wanted to go die for the Faith in Muslim land (did I get the right Saint?). I mean, I'm not eager about death . . . but what could be more noble for Christ? Just to be willing?

We have to keep praying! Get better informed, make noise.
