Facing the facts about health insurance... (w/ Update)

is really very simple.

Somehow, in the past 50 or so years, the entire concept of health insurance has been turned inside out and upside down.  No longer do we insure against a catastrophic event, what was once called a "major medical" policy, but now expect our insurance to pay for hangnails and head colds.

As a nation, we run to the doctor for the most trivial of reasons because "it's free."  This phenomenon is not relegated to the people who are insured through their employer, but includes Medicare recipients also.

A number of years ago, I had a lady friend who was on Medicare.  She had problems with the maintenance of her toenails and so her doctor referred her to a podiatrist.  Every six weeks, she visited the podiatrist to have her nails clipped, not by the doctor, but by an assistant in the office.  Medicare was billed for an office visit and for the clipping of her nails, a procedure that could have been performed by any competent manicurist.  Of course, if she went to manicurist, she would have to pay $5.00 or $10.00 to have her nails clipped.  Why do that when you can get it done for "free."

Both my husband and I are recent receivers of this abomination called Medicare.  Unlike most recipients, I carefully review the statements for our services.  Just a few weeks ago, my husband had a electrocardiogram performed.  When I saw the amount billed to Medicare, I almost had a stroke.  A relatively simple procedure, the technology of which has long since paid for, cost close to $4,000.00.  A doctor isn't even required to do the procedure, a technician being sufficient for the job.  Admittedly, a doctor "reads" the results, which were already known to us by the nurse.   What Medicare actually paid the clinic for the procedure is an unknown, but not for long, since I plan on spending some quality time with the billing office to find out this information.

Except for a period in which I worked for Costco, we self-ensured by carrying the equivalent of a "major medical" policy with a high ($2500.00 - $5000.00) deductible.  Our doctor had opted out of the whole insurance racket, which was fine with us.  If we needed to see him, an average office call amounted to $60.00.  Often, he spent at least an hour with us.  Contrast that with our new Medicare provider, which we are lucky to have as most doctors don't accept Medicare patients.  He bills Medicare an average of $200.00 - $300.00 per visit, which lasts an average of 15 minutes.  This is necessary because he is only compensated a percentage of this amount.  And around and around it goes.

Obama, when he's not golfing, specializes in division - race against race, rich against poor, and old against young.  The majority of comments on Medicare are young people railing against us oldsters.  How dare us expect to get our health care for "free."  Might I remind them that we were not given a big say-so in this whole deal, and that we have paid into it since its inception.  Problem is, there are many of us who know the system is rigged.  My mother, who worked in the health field, knew back in the 60's that Medicare was not a good thing, and was not in favor of its passage.

All you lefty loons who think Obamacare is the solution, had better wake up and do a bit of research.  If Obamacare remains in effect, something I doubt will happen, your "health care" will consist of sitting on a waiting list to see one of the few doctors still practicing. But, cheer up - it'll be "free."

"Fixing" the system is simple.  I've said it over and over and people with all sorts of fancy degrees to back me up.
  • Get rid of employer provided insurance, something that arose as a result of wage controls.
  • Go back to the concept of "major medical" policies and pay for your own routine office visits (oh, the inhumanity.)
  • Tort reform to limit frivolous law suits so your doctor doesn't have to practice "defensive" medicine.

No more "summit" talk...

I've never been a fan of Bill O'Reilly.  I think he's a fence-sitter and arrogant.  While Glenn Beck can sometimes strike folks as a bit over the top, at least he has passion and  tries to be respectful to those who have differing opinions.  If Joseph Klein is right that O'Reilly gave Obama high marks for that headache inducing waste of time yesterday, well - boo on him.

We all know the purpose of the summit was to try and make republicans look bad.  I think the Obama strategy backfired badly. However, the attention span of the American people (those that even bothered to watch), is short and shallow.

If you read some of the comments on Obama's website (no link on purpose), you will see over 800 comments from people that think he sounded and looked brilliant - even though the majority of the MSM, of all people, thinks he and his minions looked pretty incompetent.

Realize this:  Obama, as a true narcissist, thinks he did great and will move ahead with any means necessary to pass this horrible bill.  The less time we spend hashing over every little nuance of yesterday's political theater, the more time we'll have to call our representatives and senators.

Obama Enjoyed Hearing Himself Talk at Health Care Summit
by Joseph Klein
Bill O’Reilly must be angling for an interview at the White House with President Obama because he gave Obama high marks for his handling of the health care summit yesterday.  I watched most of it and saw a pedantic, petulant, arrogant Obama who spoke for 119 minutes – nine minutes more than the 110 minutes that all 17 Republicans took to make their statements.  When added to the time taken by the Democratic congressional spokespersons, the Obamacare supporters consumed a whopping 233 minutes. read the rest

Health Care Bill Predictions

I love it when Obama plasters his face on the TV screens of the American public. The more he talks the worse it gets. Yesterday he hit 5 morning shows and tonight he'll be on Letterman. Since he's already told us a gazillion times, "if you like your plan you can keep your plan and ditto for your doctor", he has now switched to the mandatory requirement in "his" plan.

If any single thing will destroy this whole thing it will be the forcing of people to buy health insurance. The American public is fed up with being regulated and coerced. The elites, including Obama, keep bringing up mandatory car insurance as an example of how well it all works. Could I have a show of hands of the number of people that have been in an auto accident with someone with no insurance? I could raise my hand at least FOUR times. So how's that mandatory thing working for us all?

Oh, but wait. This time it's diiiiiifferent. They're going to fine you a nice chunk of change for not having health insurance. They're also going to tax sugary soft drinks, cut Medicare, expand Medicaid - all in the interests of "saving" money and funding health insurance.

Yesterday I read all the amendments relating to the latest incarnation of the health bill. Only in the hallowed halls of Congress could someone say increasing Medicaid eligibility to 150% of poverty level and providing universal coverage for children"saves money." And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Take a few minutes and at least read the summary of the amendments.

Thanks to Pamela Geller over at Atlas Shrugged, I spent some time on Physicians for Reform. They outline exactly how to fix health delivery. And what do they say? Why exactly what I've been saying all along.
[...]

Three fundamental reforms are needed to stabilize American healthcare. If any one of them is neglected, patient-centered healthcare will not survive. We must correct the inefficiencies or our present system, not simply spend more money on a system destined to fail.

  1. Insurance Reform
  2. Tax Reform
  3. Tort Reform
But, what the hay - seeing as how Barry is going to render us unable to protect ourselves while he strives to be the savior of the world, we probably won't need health care. We'll all just end up nuked and we won't even get 72 virgins.

Get Ready for the Battle

Just as I predicted the news wires have exploded and we all have much hard work ahead of us.

Health Care Is Not a Privilege … Nor Is It a Right
by Brian Schwartz is excellent and once again points out what I've been saying all along. Government controls and mandates are what make insurance so expensive.

In the state of Idaho, which is the state with the fewest mandates, we still only have a choice of three or four companies. If a company in Iowa for instance had a better plan at lower cost, it's the government that says I can't buy it. The result is we have to pay over $500.00 per month for catastrophic insurance for the two of us.

Each year cost of the policy takes a jump even though we have never had one penny paid toward our medical bills. We pay for all routine visits. How about getting the government and the employer out of the insurance business and having some real competition?
