Male hormone in womb linked to autistic traits: study
Check out the solution in red....My comments in blue...
LONDON (AFP) – Babies exposed to high levels of the male hormone testosterone in the womb have a greater risk of developing autistic characteristics as children, a study said Monday.
Researchers from Cambridge University recorded foetal testosterone levels in the amniotic fluid of 235 pregnant women.
They compared results against questionnaires designed to measure children's autistic traits between the ages of six and 10.
They found that high testosterone levels were linked to answers that reflected poor social skills, imagination and empathy -- but good attention to and memory for detail.
Professor Simon Baron-Cohen said the research went further than previous studies that had found links between foetal testosterone and less eye contact as a baby, slower language development and more difficulties with empathy.
"The study highlights for the first time the association between foetal testosterone and autistic traits, and indicates that foetal testosterone not only masculinises the body, it masculinises the mind," he said.
But he underlined that the study was not confirming a link between foetal testosterone levels and full-blown autism.
"We all have some autistic traits -- these are a spectrum or a dimension of individual differences, like height.
"It is important to note that this research does not demonstrate that elevated foetal testosterone is associated with a clinical diagnosis of autism or Asperger Syndrome," he added.
The Guardian newspaper said that the research, published in The British Journal of Psychology, could bring prenatal screening for autism closer to reality, potentially allowing women to terminate babies with the condition. Yep, we don't want any "disabled" people cluttering up our world.
Baron-Cohen said this needed to be debated. "If there was a prenatal test for autism, would this be desirable? What would we lose if children with autistic spectrum disorder were eliminated from the population?" he said.
"We should start debating this. There is a test for Down's Syndrome and that is legal and parents exercise their right to choose termination, but autism is often linked with talent. It is a different kind of condition." All righty then - talent may save you from being chopped up in the womb.
Research could open the way for new treatments for autism, he said. But he acknowledged that this too would be controversial.
"We could do something about it. Some researchers or drug companies might see this as an opportunity to develop a pre-natal treatment. There are drugs that block testosterone.
"But whether we'd want to would be a different matter," he said Why bother - just kill them.

How Nazi of them!
Tom's the Man ! yesiree,
With my last two pregnancys these "downs" tests were manditory. I said that I didn't want them, but I was told that I didn't have a choice. You know what comes next dont you?
They're reasoning was so that I could prepare myself if it were bad news. I said if it's bad news then I will have the rest of my life to prepare right?
Some of the questionaire's that I was required to fill out were so intrusive, I finally got fed up ,and would write on my forms things like "it really isn't any of your business" Now that I am older and fed up I would say go $#&^ yourself... I am paying you so don't piss me off.
A pregancy is so intrusive in many ways. They just don't deliver a baby. It's more of an interagation.
I generally would come home angry after a Dr.Visit. Oh, and they misssed Kate. She is disabled. I didn't find out until she was 3 or 4. They were right on top of that now werent they?
My Catholic OB doctor didn't know what NFP was either. All moms get the "after delivery birth control talk" , and snide comments from their nursing assistants. I WILL NOT TAKE THIS KIND OF ABUSE FROM THESE PAGANS ANYMORE. I chewed my doctor out when his office mailed me a handful of brocures for birth control.
Traitor Catholics make me sick. I dislike them more than the honest wiccans.
I am sorry for the bad language, but this stuff is sooo upsetting to me.
Quality control? I don't want anyone to reject my baby. Never!!!!
Tom - can you say "final solution?"
Belinda - I'm like you - I refuse to answer anything I don't think is pertinent to my visit...
Joprotus - The world is getting more weird by the minute...
Belinda and Adrienne, yeah, I think we need to be more assertive as patients, about a lot of things. Something like an amniocentesis is an invasive test, which can cause a miscarriage. (Small chance, but is it worth it if there's nothing they can do to help the baby, only "search and destroy"?)
I've always declined such pre-natal testing because I wouldn't abort my child, regardless of the answer. So, it makes me wonder if the abortion rate is so high with pre-natal screening for Down's because the people who wouldn't abort don't have the test done anyway.
Melody, I know of a woman who almost lost her baby after the amnio. And it turned out that the baby doesn't have Down's Syndrome anyway! (Not that it would be all right to do it, if she did.)
But I do fear the future. What will happen by the time my children are adults? Will pre-natal testing be mandatory? And, by the time my grandchildren come along, will forced abortion result from the outcome of these tests that aren't all that accurate, as it is?
Catholic wife,and Mother,
Where I live we it is required to have most of these tests. No matter even if you tell your Catholic Dr. that your keeping what's yours no matter how things turn out.
They say- Aren't you a good mother? Don't you care about your baby? Your not an irresponsible mother now are you? What is wrong with you anyway? ... Peer pressure ,Get it?
I am so scared of what Obama will do about these things.
THE POINT IS that they don't want retarded individuals in our society .
Some kids like mine are retarded ,and not with downs. -Not catchable. Retardation is not a death sentence or a life less worthy- like many people believe. And group homes for our disabled citizens are quickly fading due to these tests. Making our society all the poorer, less patient, less kind, and less compassionate.
Sorry Adrienne, your- blog dear, not mine. I get carried away when babies, and abortion are the topic.
God bless you, you were a good friend to me today. Thank you.
