ST. PAUL, Minn. - A heavy police presence, with many officers in full riot gear, stood ready Tuesday as some 2,000 people protested poverty and homelessness near the Republican convention arena.

I think each of those 2000 folks should take a homeless poor person home with them tonight. That would go a long way toward solving the problem.

Adrienne, I'm sure you know that there are literally millions of homeless poor in this country, to say nothing of those in Africa south of the Sahara and the middle east in an arc from palestine to Pakistan, in the pacific islands, in the shanty suburbs around so many Latin American metropolises, etc.

How can you write like taking 2000 unfortunates in would even begin to address this problem?

Now if every Catholic family would take one in, THAT would make a real difference!

Didn't Cardinal Martino have something to say about that last week?

I'm sure Cardinal Martino has said lots of things about the homeless, the poor, and the starving.

I have great sympathy for their plight. However, marching around with signs and than retiring to your home in the burbs might make some people feel better but does nothing to help anyone. It is stupid and pointless, wastes resources (police protection, sanitation, and clean up afterwards), that could be used to actually help someone.

Oh, I quite agree with that. I particularly like your bit about "retiring to your home in the burbs."
