Need Humility??
Have a Garden!
You would be wrong if you think I just sit around and admire my garden whilst eating bonbons. Due to the weather being uncooperative we are at least a month behind with the "spring" cleanup. The grass has invaded the daylily beds to a degree never before seen. After hand pulling close to the plants, we go back in and spray Eraser. After that comes the pine needles for mulch.
But this year I have a secret weapon - Surflan. This very expensive liquid pre-emergent will be sprayed between the rows before mulch to hopefully stem the tide of weeds. Idaho has more weeds than anywhere else on this earth.
Grass Where It Belongs
The grass and wildflower garden. Dog Trail runs through here and around the back of the property and across Father Bill's back acreage. It is probably about 1/2 mile to make the complete circle
It sounds really nice to call this the Croquet Field. Do we ever play croquet? Noooooo, because we are too busy pulling weeds. I always get cranky this time of year.

I LOVE the scenery!! Do you ever take casual walks through the area known as the Croquet Field? I think it's quite beautiful. I dare say those fields are fit for monastery grounds:0) Nice!
You enjoy a beautiful setting, and (very properly) have set about making it even more beautiful. Just remember the weeds are God's creatures too.
I wish I had known about you two years ago when I went through on I-90. I would have loved to have side-tracked to your little corner and gotten to know you in person.
Unfortunately, until we got to the Olympic Peninsula, that trip was so miserably hot we have vowed never to repeat it.
Irene - Everyone is welcome to visit. I even supply the garden gloves for those that miss weed pulling.
Weeds are indeed God's creatures so I always apologize to them right before I hit them with a toxic chemical.
I also offer condolences to the yellow jackets and earwigs before I complete the circle of life.
Tom - we actually wander around every night and every morning to see what has changed in 12 hours.
We were strolling about the other night and Harold said, "This is like taking a stroll in the woods."
Croquet Field is between the "back yard" and Mary's garden so we wander it quite often. This year, by gosh, we are actually going to play croquet. I may dress up in chiffon and a big hat ala Great Gatsby. What fun.
We also have a fire pit (otherwise known as a hole in the ground lined with big rocks), behind the cutting and veggie garden and roast weenies and marshmallows late at night.
My hardest job? After weed pulling it is deciding where I want to be. Front deck in the morning, back deck or sitting area next to cutting garden for lunch, my bench under the willow for afternoon reading, Mary's garden or the grass garden for prayer, and sometimes just a blanket on the grass so I can pretend to be a teenager again.
i vote for the blanket in the grass - you get out there and have a good time [no smoking it, though]
If it wasn't for the 30 feet of snow in the winter....
