Spring

in the

Country

We live on a dead end private road. Four houses share this road and we are responsible for the upkeep. Winter took a heavy toll this year and the pot holes were threatening to swallow our cars.

Today we had a dump truck full of wet and very heavy fill delivered. Unfortunately, the dear sweet man that brought the fill had never dribbled fill from a truck. Result? A huge pile of the heaviest stuff imaginable right in front of our driveway.

Solution? Out came the lawn tractor with its cute little Rubbermaid trailer. We started to shovel this into the trailer. When the trailer was full, one of us drove and the other pushed this into the pot holes. Now to be very clear here, we are talking about 400 feet of road that we were working on. The entire road is about 1200 feet long.

After about two hours of this hard labor ,with no end in sight, what do I spy coming down the road? A Bobcat on steroids with a huge blade on the front. When the owner of the Rock Hound heard what had happened he drove over and in less than 30 minutes fixed the entire road.

Wait a minute...I'm not sure I understand. You don't own the road...but you're responsible for the upkeep? Or do you legally own the road although maybe the state gets to make the rules?

(Similar to my townhome..I own the airspace, and the walls if anything goes wrong, and the appliances to include furance and the like, and pay assessments for pavement or other outside issues not covered by insurance....)

Is that it? Or is it something different?

So YOU had to have the fill delivered? Not a government authority?

Interesting to read about your "private" road. That's crazy that you have to take care of it...I don't get it. Anyway, then I read your "old" meme about all the trees and bushes etc. that were planted 10 years ago. You could have shown some of them in your photo....looks kinda barren to me :-)
Good luck....you folks really work hard when your not on the computer entertaining us all. Thanks.

adoro - the road is considered private and yes, we own it. It is really only to service the four houses. Therefore, all upkeep is to be done by us.

The first house on the road is Father Bill, we're number two, the third house is a bunch of less than savory folks who do not help take care of the road. The fourth house owns the tractor that gets us plowed out in the winter.

There is a road association but in order to get number 3 to do anything we would have to take them to court. Just not worth it.

Father Bill is almost 70 so he just cheers us on and offers money which we turn down:)

micki - on the left of the road in the picture is grass fields. This area produces the majority of the grass seed for the entire world. Jacklin Seed Company which is now part of Simplot, is the major grower here. They lease the land across the road from us.

The little bit of trees and bushes on the left is just the beginning of our property. You can just barely see our house to the far right.

I promise I will take some pictures that show different views of the property.

You know...I would think it fun to dump the fill on the house of the people who don't help. I can understand financial difficulty, but one would think blocking their doorway with fill would at least force them to get out the shovel and do some labor.

Dunno...although I'm a white trash girl, I was raised to be a farmer instead. An Irish one. We tend to be passionate and stubborn and demading of the work to be done! LOL!

And keep taking care of Fr. Bill. God bless him. :-)

I've dreamed of waaaay worse than dumping a pile of fill in their driveway. They'd just drive across my back acres anyway - they've done that in the past.

Some day I'll tell ya about the pit bull attacks. Literally! And their stupid rooster that did about $100.00 damage to the meditation garden, tore open a huge bird seed bag in the barn (garage), got diarrhea, and crapped all over the barn. HUGE piles. Need me to go on????

Things got better after one of the pits bit the sheriff when he came out. Bye Bye, doggie.

We also live on a gravel road, but it is taken care of by the parish. It doesn't matter though, the minute we get a day's rain, the gravel runs off and we're stuck with potholes.

Add to that the idiots who like to burn out, try to spin out around the 90 degree curve, etc.

so a 'private road' is a euphemism for a long driveway?

i note your 'holy card' site is open for public viewing - what, pray tell, is the other that is kept locked up so securely?
stop by my place and start a conversation.
