Health Care for Illegals?

Jury in favor of hospital that deported immigrant is the headline. It should have read illegal immigrant.

While I feel for the man at the center of this case, it points to a very serious problem with the delivery of our health care. It also reminds us that our system is under attack by the type of lawyers that will take any kind of case and tie up our courts.

The man, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, was in a serious accident while in Stuart, Florida and was hospitalized for over three years before finally being returned to Guatemala by order of the courts.

His cousin and legal guardian files a lawsuit:

[...]
"The lawsuit filed by Jimenez's cousin and legal guardian sought nearly $1 million to cover the estimated lifetime costs of Jimenez's care in Guatemala. It also asked for damages from the hospital for "unlawfully detaining" him and punitive damages to discourage other medical centers from taking similar action."

I really like the part about "unlawfully detainment." The hospital spent millions of dollars to care for this man and the attorney dreams up unlawful detainment as part of the suit. And folks, guess who really paid the bill? Why, the people such as myself who pay for medical insurance foot the bill. Not to mention higher prices we pay for all services because doctors and hospitals pay exorbitant amounts of money each year to protect themselves from such lawsuits.
