Happy Birthday to Meeeeeeeee

In a shameless attempt to garner attention for myself, allow me to announce my birthday.

On December 31st, 1945, at 13 minutes to midnight my Mom and I finally met face to face.

Until about my 13th birthday I believed the parties and celebrations were about me. Nothing since then has occurred to change my mind.

Wishing all my blogger friends a very Happy and Safe New Year

Are There Animals in Heaven?

****This is not the right place if you're expecting great theological insights to this question. I do have my opinion and have discussed it with my pastor. I have also read the opinions of people with far greater minds than mine. Bottom line? We don't know.

****I'm glad the thoughts and hopes of people I admire are similar to mine. Sort of a "great minds" moment. I have few of those so allow me a pass on this one.

****I hold a firm faith that our "guys", as I call my pets, will be with us if we end up in heaven. I absolutely do not believe there is a hell for animals. This gives you another reason to aspire to do the will of God. Little FiFi will not be reunited with you if you don't go to heaven. This means those that do make it will have to set up some sort of heavenly Humane Society to find new owners for the abandoned pets. I'm thinking we (I have high hopes!), may have better things to do in heaven, so behave yourself!

*
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
*
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
*
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
*
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
*
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
*
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

****The Critter passed away just a few minutes ago. He was our beloved pet and companion, who brought tremendous joy and happiness to our lives. He leaves a tremendous hole in his absence, as he was loved and cared for as a human being. Forgive me if I don't post a picture of him. It's too difficult for me to look at him right now.Thank you to all of you who prayed for his well being.

Please pray for Tom and his family. Take a moment to let him know you care...

****Take a few minutes and read what Father John Speekman prepared for the Feast of the Holy Family.

****I am always amazed at the amount of money that is spent on kids by their parents. It is not unheard of for parents to pile up Christmas presents costing a combined total approaching the national debt. Karen De Coster in her post "Consumer Kids and Their Plastic Lives" places the blame squarely where it belongs.

****My Irish friend, James Healy, calls for the United Nations to "get lost." I'm all for that! This is a must read for all of you who receive the majority of your news from the MSM (main stream media) Read also what he has to say about the situation in Israel.

St. Thomas Becket
Archbishop of Canterbury
December 29
*

****A sword's crushing blow extinguished the life of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, on a cold December evening as he struggled on the steps of his altar. The brutal event sent a tremor through Medieval Europe. Public opinion of the time and subsequent history have laid the blame for the murder at the feet of Becket's former close personal friend, King Henry II. read more
*
*

Thomas Becket was born 1118 in London, England. — died Dec. 29, 1170, Canterbury, Kent; canonized 1173; feast day December 29) Archbishop of Canterbury (1162 – 70). He was the son of a Norman merchant and served as chancellor of England under Henry II. Not only did Thomas help the King increase his power because of his brilliance as an administrator, diplomat, and military strategist, but they were close friends.
*
Henry wanted to keep royal control of the church and so he appointed his drinking buddy Thomas as archbishop of Canterbury in 1162.
*
Thomas, however, had different ideas and opposed royal power in the church. In 1164, Henry issued the Constitutions of Clarendon, listing royal rights over the church and decided to try Thomas in a court.
*
Thomas, knowing that was a no-win situation, took off for France and didn't return until 1170. He was murdered in the cathedral by four of Henry's knights.

*
*
Memorable Quotes from Becket (1964), the movie starring Peter O'Toole as King Henry II, Richard Burton as Thomas Becket, and John Gielgud as King Louis VII of France. Other than portraying Becket as a Saxon instead of a Norman the movie is excellent.
*
Thomas a Becket: Honor is a private matter within; it's an idea, and every man has his own version of it.
King Henry II: How gracefully you tell your king to mind his own business.
*
Saints like Thomas Becket, Augustine, and Francis of Assisi are my favorites. These are people that have so many human frailties and still managed to answer the call of God.

Breaking News:

Boise, Idaho: An emergency session of the Idaho State Legislature has met to push through legislation making it a criminal offence to wish for a white Christmas. A conviction carries with it a mandatory sentence of one year house arrest for a first offence. Prisoner will be allowed out for shoveling. A second offence is life in prison with no parole.

Public opinion was heavily in favor of the death penalty, but Bishop Michael Driscoll stepped in and said the Catholic Church does not support the death penalty for "white Christmas wishing" offences. There is also a large Mormon population which also backed the life in prison sentence.

Two-time offenders have already been spotted in snow mobiles trying to cross into neighboring states to avoid prosecution. Most have been turned back at the border. Utah in particular has been vigilant at patrolling their borders.

Utah official, Benny Hanna, was quoted as saying, "we have our own criminals to worry about. Utah is considering the same legislation and will pattern it after the recent Idaho law. These people have got to realize they just can't go around wishing for anything they want without concern for the impact on others."

Tensions continue rising with snow levels

KXLY

SPOKANE -- Over the past few days the number of assaults on plow truck drivers, which have ranged from shovel throwing to gun threats, have continued to climb along with December's record snow levels.
Ho, ho, ho, and Merry Christmas

Fear of roof collapses mounts with snow
Trevor VanDyke/KREM 2

INLAND NORTHWEST - Another round of snow is expected this weekend, and forecasters say that the expected warmer temperatures will make for more wet and heavy snow.

With record snowfall in the month of December, many home and business owners are concerned about the threat of roof collapses. Clearing rooftops has become as big a priority for many as clearing driveways and walkways.

SPOKANE - The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for much of the Inland Northwest until noon Saturday.
KREM 2

Snow accumulations of 3-6 inches are expected by Saturday afternoon over portions of the Palouse and Spokane area. Up to 9 inches is possible in the Coeur d'Alene area.

Snow is expected to start this evening and continue through Saturday morning. By Saturday afternoon snow may change to rain.
Third Day of Christmas

****So often at this time of year we have such great expectations of how we want the season to unfold. We envision finding the perfect gift and cooking the perfect feast. We want our decorations to put Martha Stewart to shame and the kids to be well behaved. And, of course, we want to look smashing at midnight Mass.
*
****The reality is usually different. No matter how carefully we plan, something always seems to go wrong. By the time Christmas Eve rolls around we are exhausted, nervous, and probably have an upset stomach.
*
****I did hair for many, many years and I remember well the ladies and their laments before Christmas.
*
****"I haven't even started my baking, my cards aren't done, and I still have so much shopping to do," they would moan.
*
****Never one to keep my mouth shut (what fun is that?), I would say, "if you don't want to do all that baking why don't you just buy some cookies and, while you're at it, why not skip the cards?
*
****"Oh, I couldn't do that."
*
****"Well yes you can, my dear. Just try it, you may like it."
*
****Meantime the husbands are being directed by a frantic wife to make sure the lights on the house are straight or worse, you're one of those guys that really, really gets into this light hanging thing. John across the street has 25,000 lights so you, by God, are going to have 50,000, and on and on, until your neighborhood looks like 2001: A Space Odyssey.
*
****This year, because of the record snowfall, we had no tree. There were no lights and the wreaths were not to be seen. We were so busy moving the snow around that all I had time to make was a couple of loaves of cranberry-orange bread. I found some old chocolate almond bark in the cupboard, melted it, threw in some pecans and raisins. Dropped by the spoonful on a piece of foil it hardened and became candy blobs.
*
****On Christmas Eve we had to hike out to the main road to be picked up by a dear friend to get to Mass. I was dressed appropriately in jeans, boots, sweaters, and a parka. No high heel boots, cute skirt, or sparkly earrings. So who does Father want to bring the gifts up? My hubby and me. That'll keep ya humble!
*
****But you know what? It was all fine. Christmas was still Christmas.
*
****One of my favorite books by C.S. Lewis is "Letters to an American Lady" and this is my favorite quote.
*
****"Don’t be too easily convinced that God really wants you to do all sorts of work you needn’t do. Each must do his duty “in that state of life to which God has called him.” Remember that a belief in the virtues of doing for doing’s sake is characteristically feminine, characteristically American, and characteristically modern: so that three veils may divide you from the correct view! There can be intemperance in work just as in drink. What feels like zeal may be only fidgets or even the flattering of one’s self importance...By doing what “one’s station and its duties” does not demand, one can make oneself less fit for the duties it does demand and so commit some injustice. Just you give Mary a little chance as well as Martha."

Saint John the Apostle

December 27

*

****O Glorious Saint John, you were so loved by Jesus that you merited to rest your head upon his breast, and to be left in his place as a son to Mary. Obtain for us an ardent love for Jesus and Mary. Let me be united with them now on earth and forever after in heaven.

St. Stephen

Stephen, whose name means “crown” was the first of Jesus’ disciples to receive the martyr’s crown. His feast day is December 26th and he is the patron saint of stonemasons.

The day after the birth of a new beginning we acknowledge the death of the first martyr. It is a foreshadowing of the the eventual death of our Saviour and what we may have to endure as Christians. Are you prepared to die for your faith?

Prayer to St. Stephen

****O glorious St. Stephen, first Martyr for the Faith, filled with compassion for those who invoke you, with love for those who suffer, heavily laden with the weight of my troubles.
****I kneel at your feet and humbly beg you to take my present need(s) under your special protection ... (mention here).
****Vouchsafe to recommend it to our Lord Jesus. Cease not to intercede for me until my request is granted.
****Above all, obtain for me the grace to one day meet God face to face, and with you and Mary and all the angels and saints praise Him through all eternity.

****O most powerful Saint Stephen, Deacon and Martyr, do not let me lose my soul, but obtain for me the grace of winning my way to heaven, forever and ever. Amen

Pray for Emilie and her Family

Emilie passed away on December 23rd after a battle with cancer. She was a young mother of two boys and wife to Stephen. Read his post on her passing and Emilie's last post "the next... and probably.... last chapter in my life" on December 19th.

May God grant her peace and joy and bring healing to her family.

Snow shovel is always ready

We're expecting another 8 inches tonight with winds. Can you say snowed in again? Our neighbor made a path for us all with his tractor, so I'm going to do what makes me happiest while I have the opportunity. Go to Costco!

Obambi Cares About You

Obama Photos Trigger Web Delirium

****"Not perhaps since John F. Kennedy's own beach photos has a nation been so stirred to seek out revealing images of the incoming commander-in-chief. Searches are soaring for "obama pictures" and, in a realm normally reserved for prepubescent idols, "obama shirtless." Yes, the man so far designated to stimulate the economy, restore American dignity abroad, and save the planet from global warming, has inspired lookups more befitting a, dare we say, heartthrob."

****In the spirit of the upcoming Christmas season I have tried to avoid politics, lousy liturgy, and mundane music. But this just makes me wonder about the collective intelligence of this country. Jumping around in ecstasy over pictures of a shirtless Obambi speaks volumes on this issue.

****And while we're on that subject, what about this "vacation" The One and his closest friends are enjoying. They have rented three mansions on the beach in Hawaii that have been described by the owner as "fit for royalty." Politically Obambi should have thought that one through a bit.

****On the one hand he is responsible for spreading doom and gloom about the financial situation in this country and continuously telling us how much he "cares." He cares so much that he plans on creating or "saving" over 3 million jobs. Something we know the government can't do.

****On the other hand he is spending a relaxing vacation in Hawaii surrounded in an opulence the majority of people in the world could not even imagine.

****I have never been one to be envious of the good fortune of others. God bless the people who have worked hard and are enjoying the fruits of their labors. However, the future President of the United States should not be engaging in what, in my mother's generation, could only be called a vulgar display. Tacky, tacky Mr. President Elect.

Oh yes. Want to see his abs? You'll have to do your own search.
Wow! Look what I got....

Dear Adrienne,

I am sending you a tree for Christmas....

Beautiful Belinda over at Belinda's Brain (which is a sight to behold - both her and her brain), felt bad because we couldn't have a tree this year. Even worse we may be snowed back in before Christmas Eve and all through Christmas day.

I have advised our pastor, who lives next door, to stay at the church office, which he will probably do. No priest = no Mass.

As for us? I have tons of incense, candles, missals, and EWTN. Our window of opportunity is today (our neighbor finally made a hole in the drifts), for running a few errands before the next two storms hit.

Pray for Critter

****Critter is the owner of Tom in Vegas and he has developed a rare condition called Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation. It was unexpected and he is in critical condition. Critter has already had transfusions and will, I believe, be getting another one. He was perkier today but his condition is still touch and go.

****Stop by and give Tom your support in this difficult time. For many of us our pets are so precious to us and bring us so much joy. Even though I have never been able to hold or pet Critter just to look at his dear little face makes me happy.

****After the scary time I just had with Elle I know how alone and helpless Tom feels in this time just before we celebrate the birth of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

OMGosh!!! I Missed the Winter Solstice

****I thought today was the winter solstice, one of my favorite days of the year. Not only do the days start getting longer but our family has so many wonderful celebrations. But no, it was yesterday, the 21st. Be still my beating heart.
*
****Here's some shots from last years celebration. That's me in black right next to the lady in white (didn't anyone ever tell her about wearing white after labor day?) Notice the rest of us dressed in proper Gaia and sun worshipping colors.

****After chanting and waiting for the sun to set we gathered around a fire and danced our little hearts out. Here I am at last years dance - just a blur of happiness.

****I don't celebrate the summer solstice because who wants the days to get shorter except maybe penguins? I think they mate when the days get shorter which would be a pretty good reason to celebrate.

****One thing we can be sure of (besides not wearing white after Labor Day), is the winter solstice will come again unless Obambi decides to tax it to the point where it picks up stakes and moves to Mars.

Second big winter storm pounding Inland Northwest

Coeur d'Alene area, Northern Panhandle of Idaho, Central Panhandle Mountains of Idaho, Idaho Palouse, Northeast Mountains of Washington

A winter storm warning is in effect until noon Monday for these areas.
Snowfall will vary across the region. Expect snowfall totals of five to ten inches in the valleys with up to 18 inches of snow in the mountains.

****I know that it's not all about me. I know my powers are not greater than others. I know there are probably other people who thought a "white Christmas" would be nice. I never actually fell to my knees in the corner of my office with a lit candle and said, "Dear God, please send snow."

****But the good Lord knows our thoughts and secret desires. And perhaps there was just enough of us fools who sent up that heartfelt plea for a "white Christmas." And God said, "Let there be snow. Tons and tons of snow. Next time they'll be more careful what they ask for."

****In the meantime we wait patiently for a call back from Anderson Excavating, for we are once again snowed into our humble home.

The simple human decency of George Bush

by Rick Moran

****"Many readers of this site - including yours truly - have disagreed vehemently with George Bush on numerous occasions. Unlike the left, however, most of us have seen the president as a decent, God-fearing man who took office and served during perhaps the most consequential period of American history since the Civil War.

****He will never, ever be vouchsafed this decency by the left - no matter if the evidence comes up and smacks them over the head." read more

Email to my Brother

(who thinks he hates the Catholic Church, when he bothers to think at all)

The headlines at the Huffington Post, the "citadel for truthful reporting" said, "Pope Likens Saving the Rainforest to Saving Gays." Huh?

In response to his perception of what the Pope said:

You need to read beyond the headlines and work on your reading comprehension. What he said makes perfect sense to anyone not caught up in socialism, global warming, the goddess Gaia, or heavy masturbation.

The Pope's Statement (my comments in red)

*****"(The Church) should also protect man from the destruction of himself. Yep - that's the Church's job. Tell us the truth and help us get to heaven. A sort of ecology of man is needed," the pontiff said in a holiday address to the Curia, the Vatican's central administration.

*****"The tropical forests do deserve our protection. But man, as a creature, does not deserve any less." He just said man was more important than all the "greenie weenie" crap the ignorant Yuppie yahoos of the world dish out (on biodegradable plates, of course!)

Favorite Ornament Meme

****Carolina Cannonball over at The Crescat, a most talented and very funny lady, tagged me for the favorite ornament meme. Unfortunately, this year we will not have a tree. The storage shed is so completely snowed in that retrieving our tree and other decorations is impossible. I was quite depressed about this turn of events and so my hubby dug out two little table top trees from a snow drift by the wood pile and, at least for this year, those will have to be my Christmas trees.

***My "special" ornaments are packed in a trunk in the house. Today I was able to decorate one of the little trees with a few things and put out my Nativity. That seemed to slow my heart down to a steady 70 or so beats a minute.

**** I'm sure most of you, knowing what an intelligent and cultured lady I am, would have me pegged for some Faberge type, high end, work-of-art ornament. *Sorry to flood your bathroom, but the Christmas tree is not complete until the "poodles" go up. *I've had these three critters for at least 35 years and until someone came along and informed me otherwise, they were always "the poodles."

****About 15 years ago someone came over and I was pointing out my "poodles" with their sweet little faces.

****She glanced at them and turned to me and said, "those aren't poodles, they're lambs.

****" Whaaaat? *No, no, they're poodles."

****"Sorry, they're lambs!"

****It's not that I don't like lambs; I love lambs. *I just always thought they were poodles. *Did it also mean that any number of people, out of charity, kept this knowledge from me whilst rolling their eyes behind my back? *I'll never know and they will always be "the poodles" to me.

This would have to be hubbies favorite. It's a moose poking his head through a wreath. Maybe I should name it Sarah in honor of Sarah Palin. She likes moose's, too!****Also in my trunk is my favorite Nativity. *The figures are old ones that once belonged to my Dad. *They were purchased at Woolworth's over 60 years ago. *For you younguns out there, Woolworth's was the last great five and dime. *A trip to Woolworth's in downtown St. Paul for Christmas shopping was a must for little kids.

****The figures were all made in Italy, hand-painted, and are really quite beautiful. *The main figures are the only ones remaining, although I see pieces on ebay from time to time.

****The poor little pink angel is not recovering from a two day drunk. *I just haven't figured out exactly how I'm going to attach her to the mirror. *This is not the usual place for the Nativity and a push pin was not going to work on the mirror.

****The crib is empty until after vigil Mass on Christmas Eve. I did bring the baby Jesus out of hiding so you could see Him. Just imagine; a little baby born in lowly circumstances will become the Saviour of the world.

****The gold wise men were all made by my Mom not too long before she died. They were really the last things she did before she became too ill with terminal cancer to do much of anything. We had just moved to Sedona, AZ, and she attended a class to make these. They are paper mache, yarn, trim, and fabric that has been soaked in glue and plaster and draped on a wire form. My Mom didn't think she was very artistic but these figures tell a different story.

My Friend Jody

That crazy redhead on the left is my friend Jody. We worked together as ballroom dance instructors in Houston for many years. Now you know why I like to watch Dancing With the Stars.

This season was particularly fun because I knew Mark Ballas, the professional who danced with Cloris Leachman. His Dad, George Ballas, owned Dance City, the mega-huge studio where Jody and I taught. We hardly ever saw George because he was busy in offices next door inventing things. One day George came to our teacher staff meeting and told us about this great new invention he had. He had a contract to provide this revolutionary item to the city of Houston and he needed some extra money to speed up production. He had a stock offer for us. We could buy stock in his new company for fifty cents a share. Seemed like a good idea to us so we all dug deep and bought lots and lots of stock. The new invention was named that day. It was called the Weed Eater.

Jody had a heart transplant a number of years ago and only lived a year or so after the transplant. She wasn't a Catholic and I don't recall her ever attending any church. But she had more Christian charity and goodness than many of the "good" Catholics I have met - including yours truly.

Before she died we would talk on the phone about the state of young people. She hit the nail on the head when she said, "Darlin, they aren't doing anything we didn't do, but at least we knew it was wrong. These kids today think it's alright."

This was taken a number of years after we left the business and you can see we are doing what we did best - smoke and drink. I miss Jody..............
Great Christmas Gift

This is my all time favortie tea. I get the bags, which I think are just as good as the loose, and way less work. If you have a tea drinking friend this would make a nice gift. I'm on the way to have a cup and chill out before Mass.

Catch Up Saturday

Tracy over at a Catholic Mom in Minnesota, awarded me the Marie Antoinette Award. I think it means I'm as old as Marie but look really great for my age.

****And while I was busy digesting that piece of good news our very own Therese at Aussie Coffee Shop gave me the same award, albeit with a different picture. Being a Marie Antoinette fan (that thing about eating cake really resonates with me, even though she probably never said it), both awards were welcome and appreciated. Now I must pick out 7 worthy ladies (I don't think this is a good award for a guy), to be blessed with this award.

*

So here is my list:

  • Belinda over at Belinda's Brain because she always makes me smile and loves maps and other strange stuff. This lady not only thinks outside the box, she doesn't even own a box.
  • Agnes over at Dignitatis Mulieribus, because she is a brand new blogger and is a very sweet lady.
  • Laura who has a brand new home at Wordpress
  • Lola at What Lola Wants and Some Unsolicited Advice does blogging right. What she wants, when she wants it...
  • Rachel Gray at Infused Knowledge. Very, very bright lady!
  • Angela at Where Angels Go. Angela loves meme's and awards and we love her. Don't worry Angela - I'm getting around to the Ten Top Catholic meme. Promise!
  • Kelly at Answering the Call, my east side neighbor and newly minted Catholic

*Notes from Elle

****My Mom took me to see Frank today. He's my vet and we've been on a first name basis ever since he played with my insides. I had my stitches out and the scar looks pretty good. I may be able to wear that bikini after all. We can hope.

****The steroids make me soooo hungry I tried to bust into the jar on the counter filled with doggie treats. I feel like that dog in the Beggin' Strips commercial who's in search of the bacon. Or at the very least, one of the Zombies asking for more cops to be sent. In my case it's, "bring more food," in a really creeeeepy Zombie-like voice. "Cause see, I wouldn't eat a cop even if they did send one, but don't tell my Mom that. It's good to keep her on edge. You should have seen the look on her face when I was licking her leg the other morning. She thought I was sizing her up for breakfast. ROTFLMAO!!!
*
****The nice lady at the desk had some hypo-allergenic treats and I gobbled down two or three of those and scattered crumbs all over her paperwork. She didn't seem to mind. After my nap I'll probably get this goofy barrette off my head and try to eat that like I did the last one. They definitely need salt, though.
*
****My Mom has to give me my B12 shot this afternoon. It's warming up on the counter while I'm taking a nap with my Dad. The needle is about 10 or 12 inches long. No lie! Hope she doesn't run it straight through and come out the other side and squirt it all over the floor. I heard Frank telling her not to worry where she gave me the injection. He said to think of it as "doggie lawn darts" - anywhere was good. Hmmmmm, not sure I like the sound of that at all.

**

***I've gotten pretty slim. It's my Paris Hilton look - all bones and big feet. So my Mom asked Frank if she could have the same surgery and get slim, too. How lame. I was pretty embarrassed, but I'm sure Frank is used to goofy stuff like that by now.

****Nice to touch base with all of you. If I don't snare the computer before Christmas have a Merry one, and be sure and give your fur people a really nice gift - like food!!

It's Snowing Again
Hubby hard at work. That's my shovel just hanging out waiting for me to get back to work! *I doubt we can get out our road once we have a path dug for the car. That's just about one quarter of the driveway and forget the circle. We'll see that in the spring!
